According to a report by the Investment Company Institute, the combined assets of all US-based exchange traded funds (ETFs) exceeded $336 billion. For anyone that thinks ETFs are a passing fad, this number should change their minds.

Some other interesting statistics include:

  • There is 5 times the number of dollars invested in domestic broad-based ETFs than in domestic sector-based ETFs.
  • Domestic holdings are 3 times as large as international holdings.
  • Overall assets increased 33% or by $84 billion.
  • ETF share value issuance exceeded share value redemption by barely $2 billion i.e. more people are buying than selling.
